What Is Your Best Marriage Tip?

While I was at a wedding shower, we were asked to give the bride-to-be a word of advice for a happy marriage. We had a lot of good advice like:
  • Never go to bed angry.
  • Always say I love you when you leave the house.
  • Have a date night to keep the romance in your marriage.
  • Make sure your marriage is your #1 priority.
  • Never argue in public.
  • Do not correct your husband in public.
  • Do not take your mother/father’s side in an argument against your husband.
So what was my advice? Do not keep secrets from each other. I am not talking about telling your husband everything you know or about the surprise birthday party. But never agree with your mother, father, children, and sister when they ask you, “Now don’t tell you husband but …”
Say, “No, sorry. If I have to keep if from my husband, I do not want to hear it.” You should not compromise your relationship by agreeing with such request. When you married him, you became a lifetime team. You promised to never team-up with anyone else against him.
So what would you say is the best advice for a newly wed? What kept your marriage alive? Or what did you do wrong that you wish you could do over again?
